Driving Inclusive Growth through Agri-Diversification and Institutional Linkages

The Better Income Project continues to transform the livelihoods of Small Tea Growers (STGs) across Assam and North Bengal by facilitating access to government schemes, promoting crop diversification, establishing market linkages, and supporting enterprise development. In July 2025, the project witnessed the formation of new FPOs, the active adoption of allied agri-practices, and the uptake of promotional schemes that are strengthening farmers’ incomes and resilience.

Key Highlights – July 2025

FPO Formation & Scheme Linkage: Two FPOs formed, covering 157 STGs. Received the Tea Board promotional scheme.

Education Support: 3 STG children received scholarships worth ₹10,000 each under the Tea Board HR rewards.

Govt. Scheme Facilitation:
- 2 STGs received Chai Bondhu Scheme benefits in Assam.
- Fasal Bima Yojana applied for 320 farmers for Rabi crop.
- 67 STGs completed PM Kisan registration.
- Biometric cards issued to 112 STGs

Agri-Licensing: 1 AE secured an Input License in Tinsukia district.

Farmer Awareness: 3 meetings held with Tea Board India at Jalpaiguri on SHG formation and available schemes.

Allied Livelihoods Expansion:
- Milky Mushroom Cultivation initiated by 1 AE and 2 STGs initiated in North Bengal.
- 52 STGs started piggery, 53 engaged in poultry, 27 adopted goat rearing and 319 planted arecanut in diversified plots farming across project areas.

Market Linkage: 875 STGs linked to markets for King Chili sales.

Health & Veterinary Support:
- Medical camp conducted in a flood-affected area in partnership with VK Hospital (NRL).
- Cattle vaccination drive conducted, reaching 200 animals.
- 35 farmers received BINA variety paddy seeds.

Training:
- Quality plucking: Fine Leaf Count and machine plucking demonstration organized with 15 STGs.
- Organic & Traditional Practice Training: A training session engaged 16 STGs on organic tea practices, ITKs, and green tea hand-rolling.
